Description: Like many places on the Charles River Christian Herter park is best fished up and down the shoreline. Unless there is an event going on you will never have a problem finding a place to park here. Fishing from left to right along the shore you will start at a boathouse. At this end there is a large dock that can be fished if there is no activity going on. If there are people putting boats in the water at the boathouse you will often have a slim chance of catching anything for about 100 yards to the right of the dock. From this point to the Bridge/Dock at the far edge of the main parking lot most people might think of as bad fishing terrain. There aren’t any structures and the bottom is silty without a lot of vegetation. If fished correctly large Bass can be found here. This is actually the location of the first fish I ever caught in Boston. In the early summer bass will create beds here just out of sight from above the water. After this point you will reach a wooden bridge that is used as a dock for unloading the Charles River cruises. Water passes under this bridge and creates a calm pool filled with lily pads. This bridge can be fished from either side the river side is wide open and tends to be pretty deep depending on the water level. The other side can be one of the most challenging places to fish in Boston. To successfully fish this side you need to be able to consistently land a cast in about a 2 foot circle. If you find the right spot at the right time you can find some large bass and pickerel here. After this point you will hit some scattered docks and downed trees until you reach the bridge that leads to Rt.2. That is generally my stopping point. After that point it becomes more overgrown and difficult to access the water.
